ADHD: Diagnosis and Treatment

What is ADHD?

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects both children and adults. It is characterised by a persistent pattern of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity that can significantly impact an individual’s daily life. ADHD can manifest in various ways, making it essential to understand its different subtypes.

The Subtypes of ADHD:

  • Inattentive Type: Individuals with inattentive ADHD may struggle with focus, organisation, and attention to detail. They often make careless mistakes and have difficulty sustaining attention, particularly in tasks that don’t interest them.
  • Hyperactive-Impulsive Type: Those with hyperactive-impulsive ADHD tend to be restless, impulsive, and have trouble sitting still. They might interrupt others, act without thinking, and have difficulty waiting their turn.
  • Combined Type: Many individuals with ADHD exhibit symptoms from both the inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive subtypes.

Diagnosing ADHD:

Diagnosing ADHD is a complex process that typically involves a comprehensive assessment, including a clinical evaluation and input from caregivers, teachers, or family members. Dr. Cristina Gradillas uses evidence-based criteria and assessments to accurately diagnose ADHD, ruling out other potential causes of the symptoms.

Symptoms of ADHD:

Common symptoms of ADHD may include:

      • Inattention and distractibility
      • Impulsivity
      • Hyperactivity
      • Difficulty organising tasks
      • Forgetfulness
      • Frequent careless mistakes
      • Challenges with time management

It’s important to note that not all individuals with ADHD will exhibit the same symptoms or to the same degree.

Treatment Options:

Effective treatment for ADHD can greatly improve an individual’s quality of life.

  • Behavioural Therapy: Behavioural interventions, such as cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), can help individuals develop strategies to manage their symptoms and improve their focus and organisation.
  • Medication: In most cases, medication is recommended to manage ADHD symptoms. Medications like stimulants and non-stimulants can be effective in reducing hyperactivity and improving attention and impulse control. Stimulants are typically the most commonly prescribed.
  • Lifestyle and Educational Support: Lifestyle modifications, educational accommodations, and coping strategies are crucial to enhance daily functioning.

Dr Cristina Gradillas, an English trained Psychiatrist can provide families from the UK and Republic of Ireland with assessments and treatment for ADHD at her private Clinic in Málaga, Spain.

Our son was first prescribed anti-psychotic medication by a Spanish psychiatrist during the pandemic, who met and treated him in Malaga, when we were unable to find a psychiatrist in Ireland who would treat our son in the short term.
